The Royal baby, Rhianna's gray hair, and Christy Turlington in lingerie

Royal Baby

It’s been a red-hot week for weather and news! Of course the biggest story has been the royal baby and we now know that the Cambridges have a bouncing baby boy. What’s that got to do with lingerie, you wonder? Well … quite a lot actually. There’s such a thing as royal baby fever, and it even extends to undie appeal! The US Center for Retail Research has predicted we’re going to spend about £243 million on our baby fever, partly consisting of three million bottles of champagne uncorked to celebrate the Prince’s arrival, followed by party food throughout August, and around £24 million on memorabilia and toys, several million of which will be for grown-up ‘toys’ and souvenirs to remember the special day.

So if you want to join in the celebrations, here’s the hot predictions for baby underwear madness. Blue is going to be big, naturally, but the underlying trend will be for nursery notes, so think broderie anglaise, pastel colours, simple stripes and a general sense of wholesomeness. Top picks from us? The Lise Charmel Evasion Bleue Bra – utterly cute, very flattering and timeless enough to still look fresh and enticing when the royal baby fever has broken. And if stripes, even chevron stripes, are not your thing, the prettiest white lace top imaginable is the Bracli Lingerie Pearl Halter Top – very flattering and totally in harmony with the trend for sweet sophistication that we can expect over the next few months. By the way, on the same day baby Cambridge arrived, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem had a baby girl! It’s definitely baby season …

Rihanna goes grey, brrr …

She’s known for her changes of style, and Rihanna has gone right out there again, with her new hair extensions and her ice grey dye job. The rumour is that it’s her new lookbook imge for MAC cosmetics but either way, she’s started a twitter storm. We’ve been debating what to pair with such an intense grey look and we were divided – some of us went for the full dramatic Rihanna vibe, such as the Titlion gold snake G-string while others opted for the harmonising approach with lavender, mauve and grey lingerie – the Ulla Marie lingerie set is a perfect example where either the mauve or graphic colours would tone perfectly with grey hair.

Rihanna’s white string playsuit worn over a white bra and nude panties this Thursday suggests that those who plumped a dramatic colour contrast were right, at least as far as Riri is concerned!

Christy Turlington – Minimalist Lingerie

Some of us in the office are old enough to remember Christy Turlington’s first advert for Calvin Klein when she was in her teens. Now, at 44, she’s featuring in Calvin’s minimalist skimpies again and we’re all in favour! Of course the pared-down look that Christy rocks so well isn’t for everyone – slicked-back wet hair can be unforgiving and for many women, super-plain lingerie seems to highlight the features of our bodies we like least. If you like the look, the severity can be muted by having straightened but dry hair, maybe with a quiff or pouf, and opting for a black lingerie set like the Vikki bra and thong by Insinuate, where the sexily severe tailoring is matched by careful attention to adjustment so that a perfect fit flatters those of us who don’t have Christy’s perfect body.
